The Member of Parliament for Weija Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on Ghanaians to put aside political differences and work together to address the country’s recurring flooding challenges.
Speaking during the National Clean-up Exercise, the MP said the recent floods in the Weija Gbawe Municipality, which resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property, should serve as a wake-up call for all stakeholders to collaborate in finding lasting solutions.
He stressed that tackling flooding requires a collective effort involving government, local authorities, communities and individuals.
Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Samuel Basintale Amadu, urged residents to adopt responsible sanitation practices and stop indiscriminate disposal of waste.
He said improper disposal of refuse contributes significantly to blocked drains and increases the risk of flooding in communities.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Weija Gbawe, Felix Odartey Lamptey, also cautioned traders and individuals who have constructed shops and other structures on waterways and drainage channels to remove them immediately.
He warned that the Assembly would take enforcement action against persons who fail to comply with the directive.
The National Clean-up Exercise forms part of government’s post-flood measures aimed at improving sanitation, clearing blocked drains and reducing the impact of future flooding.
