A two-day nationwide clean-up exercise has begun across seven flood-affected regions, with residents, state institutions and other stakeholders coming together to clear waste, desilt drains and restore public spaces.

The exercise, which started at 6:00 am on Friday, July 10, 2026, will run until 1:00 pm and continue on Saturday, July 11, within the same time frame.

Although participation was slow in some areas at the start of the exercise, activities gradually picked up as local authorities, waste management companies, security personnel, community members and other groups joined efforts to improve sanitation conditions.

The government said Friday’s exercise is focused on the involvement of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), public and private institutions, educational institutions, security services, waste management companies and the general public.

Saturday’s activities will place greater emphasis on community participation, with residents, volunteer groups, traditional authorities, security agencies, MMDAs and waste management companies expected to lead clean-up efforts in their respective areas.

To encourage participation, shops, markets, commercial businesses, corporate organisations and other non-essential establishments in the seven affected regions have been directed to close from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on both days.

Essential service providers, including emergency institutions, have however been exempted from the closure.

The Ministry has appealed to residents, businesses, transport operators, religious bodies and other stakeholders to actively participate in the exercise as part of efforts to rebuild cleaner and safer communities following the recent floods.

In the Greater Accra Region, about 104 flood-prone and affected areas have been earmarked for the exercise.

The clean-up is being carried out across several Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, including Ga South, Ga Central, Ga North, Ga East, Okaikwei North, Adenta, Madina, Shai Osudoku, Ayawaso West, Ayawaso North, Ayawaso Central, Ayawaso East, Tema West, Ledzokuku-Krowor (LEKMA), Ningo-Prampram, Ada East and Ada West.

In Ga South Municipality, activities are ongoing in communities such as Tetegu, STC, Mallam East, New Weija, New Gbawe, Mallam West, Weija Zero and Mallam Junction.

Residents in Ga Central are also taking part in the exercise at areas including Awoshie, Kolegu, Israel, A-Land, Laffa, Deseree-Atieku Junction and Alhaji Curve-Shantang Market.

Other locations targeted include Pokuase Footbridge, Pokuase Ayawaso Station, Ofankor Barrier, Tantra, Mile 7 and Spot M in Ga North, as well as Dome Market, Dome Railway, Abokobi Drain and Agbogba Drain in Ga East.

Within Accra, sanitation teams are concentrating on major drains and flood-prone locations such as Alajo, Kokomlemle, Pig Farm, Ladidi, Mamobi, Accra Newtown, Timber Market, Nima Highway, the Kanda stretch through Kawukudi, Dr Hilla Limann Drain and the 37 Hospital corridor.

The exercise also covers parts of Tema West, including Texpo Market, Inner Harbour Road drains, Community 20-Lashibi drain, Tse Addo, Airport areas, T-Junction Elwak, Borla Junction, Agyeman Drain, Koliko Drain and LADMA main drains.

Coastal and peri-urban communities such as Teshie-Nungua Estate, Prampram Landing Beach, Mataheko, Sege, Sege Junction and Kassei Junction are also participating.

Authorities say they expect participation to increase as the exercise progresses, with the ultimate goal of improving sanitation and reducing the risk of future flooding in affected communities.
