The Member of Parliament for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, has assured victims of the recent flood disaster of support as authorities intensify efforts to provide relief to affected families.

The assurance comes after a devastating downpour claimed the lives of eight people, including six children and two women, when floodwaters swept through the Railway Quarters behind ABC, destroying homes and washing away several kiosks.

During a visit to the affected community alongside officials of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the MP expressed condolences to the bereaved families and pledged to work closely with NADMO to support survivors as they rebuild their lives.

Madam Akurugu also called for a change in public attitudes towards environmental sanitation, urging residents to refrain from indiscriminate disposal of waste into drains.

She said while government remains committed to improving drainage infrastructure, residents also have a responsibility to keep waterways free of refuse to reduce the risk of flooding.

Officials from both the Ga East and National offices of NADMO assured victims that relief assistance would be provided following an assessment of the damage.

They reiterated the organisation’s commitment to supporting affected households and coordinating with other agencies to respond to the disaster.

NADMO also encouraged residents in flood-prone communities to heed weather warnings and cooperate with authorities during emergencies to help prevent future loss of lives and property.

Residents, meanwhile, have renewed calls for improved drainage systems and long-term flood mitigation measures to avert similar tragedies.
