The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced that the government’s desilting and dredging works on the Odaw River are expected to be completed by December 2027 as part of efforts to reduce flooding in Accra.

The Minister disclosed this while responding to a question in Parliament from the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Opoku Adusei, who sought updates on the project’s timeline and budget.

Mr. Adjei explained that the exercise forms part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, which is aimed at improving drainage infrastructure and mitigating perennial flooding in the capital.

“The desilting and dredging contract for the Odaw River is being implemented as part of the GARID Project. The project commenced in February 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by December 2027, with resources allocated under the GARID Project,” the Minister told Parliament.

He said the project is expected to significantly improve the capacity of the Odaw River, one of Accra’s major drainage channels, and reduce the risk of flooding in communities along its banks, particularly during the rainy season.

The Minister also addressed concerns over flooding at Ofankor, outlining measures being implemented by the government to tackle the recurring problem in the area.

He assured Parliament that the Ministry remains committed to delivering flood control projects across the country to protect lives, property and critical infrastructure.
