Former National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Organiser, Joshua Akamba, has declined to speak on the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), insisting he is not in any official position to do so.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Akamba made it clear that he would not engage in discussions about galamsey because he is not involved in mining activities.

“I am not going to talk about galamsey because I am not involved in galamsey or mining,” he stated.

He urged the ruling NDC to implement whatever policies the party has promised on the issue.

“Whatever the party said about galamsey, they should implement it,” Akamba added.

He explained that without holding any government appointment, he does not feel positioned to speak on the matter.

“I am not on any appointment to be able to talk about it,” he said.

Akamba, however, praised President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah for the work being done so far.

“The president is doing well. I know the minister is reclaiming lands, so I know he is doing his work,” he noted.

Since assuming power, the NDC government has launched several initiatives to combat galamsey, including the establishment of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Bluewater guards, stricter regulation of excavator imports, tracking of mining equipment, and land reclamation efforts in affected areas.

He has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to winning the fight against galamsey, stating it will be sustained through stronger enforcement, new technologies and closer collaboration with civil society organisations (CSOs).
