Black Stars midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has reaffirmed his commitment to the national team, stressing his readiness to operate in any role assigned to him as Ghana continues its World Cup campaign.
The young midfielder delivered a decisive moment in Ghana’s opening Group L fixture, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a 1-0 victory over Panama and hand the Black Stars a vital three points.
Yirenkyi had previously been deployed at right-back under former head coach Otto Addo, a tactical decision that drew debate among observers who felt it restricted his influence in midfield.
However, his return to a central role under current coach Carlos Queiroz has coincided with a marked rise in form and impact.
Now increasingly central to Ghana’s midfield structure, the 21-year-old has already netted twice for the national team, including his first World Cup goal, further strengthening his growing reputation on the international stage.
Speaking after the win, Yirenkyi downplayed any preference over position, insisting his focus remains firmly on contributing to the team’s success.
I’m just quite happy to serve my nation anywhere on the field. I don’t really mind. Just do the job.”
Ghana’s opening victory leaves them second in Group L, behind England, who began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.
The Black Stars now shift focus to a highly anticipated clash with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before concluding their group-stage matches against Croatia four days later.
Queiroz’s side will be aiming to maintain their winning momentum as they pursue a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2010.
