The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA) has strongly condemned the alleged sexual misconduct involving a male teacher of Bole Senior High School and a female student, describing the reported conduct as unacceptable and a betrayal of the trust placed in teachers.
In a statement, the Council said it had taken notice of a video circulating on social media allegedly involving the teacher, identified as Razak Arafat, and a student of the school.
According to the NCPTA, the alleged conduct constitutes a serious breach of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Code of Conduct and undermines the professional responsibilities of teachers, who are expected to act in the best interests of students under their duty of care.
The Council described the incident as a form of gender-based violence and noted that such actions could constitute criminal offences under Ghana’s laws.
It stressed that schools must remain safe environments for learning and development, rather than places where students are exposed to exploitation or abuse.
The NCPTA also commended the Ghana Education Service for the swift interdiction of the teacher pending investigations, describing the move as an important step toward accountability.
The Council urged GES management and the GES Council to ensure that due process is followed and that appropriate administrative sanctions are imposed should the allegations be substantiated.
Expressing solidarity with the student and her family, the NCPTA assured them of the support of parents across the country and called on the public and media to respect the student’s privacy and dignity throughout the investigation process.
The Council further noted that allegations of sexual harassment involving teachers and students continue to pose challenges within the educational system and warned that such incidents erode trust between students, parents and educators while damaging the image of the teaching profession.
As part of its recommendations, the NCPTA called for a full investigation into the matter and urged the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service to collaborate with the student, her family and relevant authorities to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated and that any appropriate legal action is pursued.
