Chief Executive Officer of the Zongo Development Fund, Alhaji Halidu Haruna, has expressed concern about the growing incidence of drug abuse in Zongo communities, warning that it poses a serious threat to the future of the youth.

Speaking in an interview on Raayuwaa on Adom TV, Alhaji Haruna said addressing drug abuse has become a critical priority if Zongo communities are to realise their full potential.

“This time, the phenomenon emerging is drug abuse. If we don’t take steps to address it, the future of Zongo is gone,” he warned.

According to him, there remains a negative perception about Zongo communities, with many people associating them with social vices.

“My mission is that by the time I exit, Zongo becomes a community that will be acceptable by many. There is a perception that you would find all the bad habits in Zongo,” he said.

The CEO noted that the increasing use of illicit drugs among young people is undermining the prospects of future leaders within the communities.

“Drug abuse is becoming rampant in Zongo. The future leaders of our communities are being destroyed by drugs,” he stated.

The CEO however, expressed confidence in the potential of young people in Zongo communities and urged them to resist negative influences.

“I think Zongo has potential. We have young men and women who can achieve great things,” he said.

The Zongo Development Fund CEO further advised the youth not to allow themselves to be exploited or drawn into activities that could derail their future.

“The youth should not allow themselves to be used. You have the potential to become whoever you want to become. Protect yourself and work hard,” he urged.
