Presidential staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has urged Ghanaians to refrain from linking former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo’s resignation from the Council of State to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, insisting that such conclusions are speculative.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana Yaa Jantuah said there could be several personal reasons behind Madam Akuffo’s decision to step down and cautioned against attributing the move to political disagreements without evidence.
According to her, if Sophia Akuffo had concerns about any decision taken by government, she would have openly expressed them.
“We should not trivialise it and say she resigned because she was unhappy with the dismissal of Gertrude Torkornoo. Sophia Akuffo is an outspoken person and won’t mince words. If she has issues, she will be blunt with the truth,” she said.
Her comments follow widespread public debate after Madam Akuffo resigned from the Council of State, a development that has sparked speculation about the reasons behind her departure.
Nana Yaa Jantuah argued that resignations are common in public life and can occur for a variety of reasons, many of which may have nothing to do with politics.
“Sophia Akuffo may have her own reasons for resigning from the Council of State, and it is no indictment on any government,” she stated.
Drawing comparisons with developments in other countries, she noted that resignations are not unusual among public officials.
“There are various reasons someone will resign,” she said, adding that age, health considerations, or personal priorities could all influence such a decision.
“Maybe she thinks she is okay with going to IEA for talks and maybe waking up every morning for Council of State meetings is too much. She is old and doesn’t have to stress herself.”
The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) also suggested that health considerations may sometimes prompt individuals to reduce their workload.
“Maybe a doctor has told her to slow down because of her age. Last time, Okoe-Boye told me to slow down and take my time, advising that I take days off and rest,” she revealed.
She stressed that the public does not know what may be happening in Madam Akuffo’s personal life and should therefore avoid drawing premature conclusions.
“We don’t know what is going on in the life of our mother,” she said.
Nana Yaa Jantuah further dismissed suggestions that Madam Akuffo’s political background would necessarily place her at odds with the current administration, noting that her public service career spans different political eras.
“If Madam will have any affiliation, her first job appointment was by Rawlings and they were very close,” she observed.
She maintained that until Sophia Akuffo publicly explains her decision, Ghanaians should resist the temptation to speculate.
“Till we hear the real reasons from her, we should stop speculating stories that she resigned because of Torkornoo’s dismissal,” she said.
Madam Sophia Akuffo, a former Chief Justice and member of the Council of State, recently tendered her resignation from the advisory body. While the resignation has generated significant public interest, she has yet to publicly disclose the reasons for her decision.
