The government has announced plans to establish modern, fully equipped health facilities at Ghana’s border entry points as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s preparedness and response to potential Ebola outbreaks and other cross-border health threats.

The decision follows an assessment of border health operations at Aflao by Deputy Minister for Health, Grace Ayensu-Danquah, who reviewed existing preparedness measures and identified challenges related to infrastructure, logistics, and personnel capacity.

According to the Ministry of Health, the planned intervention will involve increased investment in border health infrastructure, improved logistics systems, the deployment of additional health personnel, and a reliable supply of essential medical and protective equipment.

In a Facebook post, the Ministry indicated that the initiative is aimed at enhancing disease surveillance, screening, and emergency response mechanisms at the country’s major entry points.

The upgraded facilities are expected to improve Ghana’s ability to detect and contain highly infectious diseases such as Ebola at an early stage before they spread within communities.

Health authorities believe the move will significantly strengthen the country’s frontline defence against public health emergencies and improve overall border health security.

Particular attention is expected to be given to Aflao, one of the country’s busiest border posts and a major transit corridor between Ghana and its neighbouring countries.

Officials say the enhanced border health system will enable faster responses to potential disease outbreaks while improving coordination among health workers and other agencies responsible for managing cross-border movements.

The government maintains that strengthening border health services remains a critical component of national efforts to safeguard public health and prevent the importation of infectious diseases into the country.
