Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has urged Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey to improve his performances ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following his display in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales.
The experienced midfielder struggled to make a significant impact in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium, as Ghana continued preparations for the global tournament.
Partey endured a difficult first half and was booked in the 30th minute before being substituted at halftime. He was replaced by Kwasi Sibo for the second half.
The 32-year-old was fortunate not to be sent off after a series of challenges that could have resulted in a second yellow card.
Reacting to his performance, Arhinful expressed concern about Partey’s physical condition, suggesting he must regain full fitness before the tournament begins.
“We need to bring Thomas Partey up to speed. He was lucky not to have been sent off against Wales. I can see that he’s put on some weight,” Arhinful told Sporty FM.
He stressed the importance of Partey being at his best, given his expected influence in Ghana’s World Cup campaign.
The Black Stars will wrap up their preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before travelling to North America for the tournament.
Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
The four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
