Residents, traders and motorists along the Kyenkyenku–Akoase–Etwe Nim Nyansa road in the Birim North District are raising alarm over worsening flooding and rapid deterioration of the stretch, which they attribute to illegal mining activities in the area.
Commuters say sections of the road become heavily flooded during rainfall, making the route difficult and dangerous to use.
Drivers who regularly ply the road report longer travel times and growing safety risks, warning that the situation is disrupting transport services and affecting local economic activities.
They are calling on government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene to prevent further damage and restore the road to a usable condition.
Speaking on the issue, the Presiding Member for the Birim North District Assembly and Assembly Member for the area, Emmanuel Asiedu Adadi, confirmed that illegal mining activities have significantly contributed to the problem.
He explained that mining operations have altered natural drainage patterns, causing water to overflow onto the road during rainfall and making movement difficult for motorists, students and other residents.
He urged security agencies and relevant stakeholders to intensify efforts to clamp down on illegal mining in the area, stressing the need to protect lives, safeguard infrastructure and restore accessibility on the road.
