The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed that Greater Accra has about 15 highly flood-prone areas across the region.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Nnawɔtwe show, the Greater Accra Regional NADMO Director, Dennis Nartey Adjarno, explained that the entire region has been assessed, and out of the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), about 15 flashpoints have been identified as high-risk flood areas.

According to him, areas such as Weija-Gbawe and Ga South are particularly vulnerable due to the presence of the Weija Dam.

Mr. Adjarno noted that although disasters cannot be predicted, NADMO remains fully prepared and has put in place measures ahead of this year’s rainy season to respond to any emergencies.

He further stated that Ghana has not failed in flood prevention efforts but acknowledged that more work still needs to be done.

He added that as a developing country, Ghana is steadily improving and will reach a point where flooding becomes less of a recurring challenge.

He also stressed the need for attitudinal change among citizens, noting that public behaviour contributes significantly to the flooding situation.

Mr. Adjarno further called for strict enforcement of building regulations and bylaws to help reduce the impact of flooding in the region.
