The Ghana High Commission in South Africa has responded to a viral video circulating on social media showing a Ghanaian national appealing for evacuation assistance.
The Mission, led by High Commissioner Benjamin Quashie, says it has engaged the individual involved, identified as Mr. Sylvester Boakye, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the High Commission, Mr. Boakye admitted that he proceeded to the airport on his own initiative without prior contact with the Mission or following the established coordination procedures required for evacuation arrangements.
The Commission explained that it remains committed to supporting him and assured that necessary assistance will be provided to facilitate his safe return to Ghana once all required administrative and logistical processes are completed.
It further clarified that, contrary to claims circulating on social media, no chartered evacuation aircraft arrived in South Africa, citing outstanding procedural and technical arrangements that still need to be concluded.
The Mission added that ongoing efforts are underway to ensure a safe, orderly, and coordinated evacuation process for all Ghanaian nationals who have registered voluntarily for repatriation.
Members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa have been urged to remain calm and to contact the High Commission directly through official channels for verified information and assistance.
