Tension flared up in Kpandai in the Northern Region on Thursday after some residents from four communities stormed the district office of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to protest the disconnection of electric power supply to their homes over alleged incorrect meter readings and underbilling. Â
The residents, mainly from Lesseni, Gbanderi, Benafedo, and Jentimah, went to the NEDCo office in Kpandai town and confronted officials, demanding the immediate restoration of power.
According to the residents, the disconnections followed an exercise by NEDCo to replace postpaid meters with prepaid meters after officials raised concerns that some of the existing meters were recording incorrect readings, leading to suspected underbilling in the affected communities.
The residents alleged that some NEDCo officials visited the area on Monday and disconnected power to the communities, leaving them without electric power supply for days.
They said repeated appeals to the company to restore power, especially as the outage was affecting businesses and students preparing for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), yielded no results, prompting the protest.
Security personnel and the District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area later intervened to restore calm and prevent further violence.
