Ghana’s live band music industry is mourning the loss of celebrated bassist Nana Kwame Sarpong Boateng, whose contributions to live music performance have left a lasting imprint on the country’s entertainment scene.
Popularly known as Ike or Sobo, he passed away on March 25, 2026, at the Ga East Hospital in Accra.
Renowned for his versatility and stage presence, Nana Kwame Sarpong Boateng performed with some of Ghana’s finest musicians, including Stonebwoy, Samini, and highlife legend Pat Thomas, among others.
He gained significant recognition as the bassist for Stonebwoy’s first-ever live band performance in 2009, an event put together by Samini. The performance featured a lineup of notable music producers, including Fred Kyei Mensah.
Colleagues within the live band fraternity have described him as a dedicated and talented instrumentalist whose passion for music elevated every stage he performed on.
Funeral arrangements released by the family indicate that there will be no wake-keeping.
A pre-burial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) Holy Ghost Temple at Adenta Frafraha. This will be followed immediately by the burial service at 9:00 a.m.
He will be laid to rest at the Madina Cemetery, after which funeral rites will be observed at the church premises.
A thanksgiving service is scheduled for Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Youth Hall of the ICGC Holy Ghost Temple after church service.
The late musician is survived by his parents and three siblings.
