Former Ghana international Kwadwo Asamoah has urged caution over expectations surrounding the Black Stars as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama in what is expected to be a challenging campaign in North America.
Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, the former midfielder admitted he is not anticipating a deep run from the team, though he remains hopeful of a positive showing.
“Honestly, I’m not expecting much, but I’m hoping for the best,” Asamoah said. “Ghana has always been one of the favourites among African teams when it comes to the World Cup, but it won’t be easy.”
The ex-Juventus star also stressed that the gap between so-called strong and weaker football nations has narrowed significantly on the global stage.
“There is no such thing as a ‘small or big’ country at the World Cup,” he explained.
“We might feel in our heads that we will beat Panama, but we have to wait and see. No matter how big or small a country is, they give everything,” he added.
The Black Stars will begin their tournament against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.
Ahead of the tournament, Carlos Queiroz’s side will step up preparations with international friendlies against Mexico and Wales later this month.
