President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will soon receive 40 additional armoured vehicles to boost the operational capacity of the Ghana Police Service.

The new fleet is expected to complement another 40 armoured vehicles procured last year, which the President said have already strengthened the police’s ability to tackle armed robbery across the country.

He made the announcement during the commissioning of a divisional police headquarters at Laasi in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.

“I’m happy to inform the IGP that another 40 armored cars are coming,” President Mahama said.

He stressed the importance of equipping security personnel with the right tools to perform their duties safely and effectively.

“When you send our officers to protect you and fight violent people, you have to provide them with the instruments and the tools to be able to do so,” he added.

The President recalled that in the past, police officers were deployed in less-protected vehicles, which exposed them to serious risks.

“In the past, we used to give them Nissan Navara light-skinned pickups to go on patrol against armed robbers. And we lost many men and women in the line of duty. We don’t want that to happen again. They must be able to go and work for us and go back safely to their families,” he said.

President Mahama emphasised that strengthening the security sector, particularly the police, remains a top priority for his administration.

“My administration continues to prioritize investments in the security sector, particularly in the Ghana police,” he said.

He added that the goal is to build a modern, professional, and people-centred police service capable of not only responding to crime but preventing it through intelligence, innovation, and stronger community partnerships.

The President also highlighted the impact of previously procured armoured vehicles, noting that they have played a significant role in combating armed robbery nationwide.
