The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has launched this year’s Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) to promote ICT and digitalisation in schools, particularly in rural communities across the country.

The national launch, held at Bechem in the Ahafo Region, was on the theme: “Addressing the Digital Divide Gap for National Growth through Inclusive Education.”

Speaking to Adom News, the Ahafo Regional Coordinator of GNECC, Ibrahim Yusif, highlighted the challenges faced by schoolchildren in rural areas, especially those with disabilities. He noted that pupils who are deaf or visually impaired often lack access to ICT tools and digital learning resources, putting them at a disadvantage.

He stressed that prioritising ICT education and digital inclusion for children with disabilities in rural communities is essential if Ghana is to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive development.

Meanwhile, GNECC Programmes Manager, Lawrencia Owusu, revealed that findings from the organisation’s research show limited national efforts to improve ICT and digital literacy among students in underserved communities.

She urged government, policymakers and stakeholders to give equal attention to rural schools, ensuring that students outside urban centres have the same access to digital education as their counterparts in cities.

According to her, the launch of GAWE is aimed at advocating increased investment and deliberate action to equip rural schools with ICT tools and training to bridge the digital divide.
