The United Party (UP) has lauded the government’s directive aimed at ensuring Ghanaian mining companies take a leading role in the country’s mining sector.
The party’s Director of Communications, Solomon Owusu, speaking on Nnawotwe Yi on Adom TV, said the move will help boost the economy and increase confidence among local investors interested in the mining industry.
Government has directed major international mining firms, including Newmont, AngloGold Ashanti, and Zijin Mining, to transition their operational mining activities to local Ghanaian contractors by December 31, 2026, or face possible sanctions.
The policy seeks to enforce revised regulations requiring surface mining to be handled by 100% Ghanaian-owned firms, while underground mining must have at least 50% local ownership.
According to Mr. Owusu, the directive will help reduce unemployment and demonstrates government’s commitment to ensuring Ghanaians take full control of the country’s natural resources.
He added that the move aligns with global best practices and commended President John Mahama for what he described as a bold initiative.
Mr. Owusu further noted that the directive is long overdue and, if properly implemented, will significantly benefit the country.
He also indicated that the policy will create opportunities for graduates of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, enabling them to secure employment after completing their studies.
