Zoomlion Ghana Limited has responded swiftly to sanitation concerns raised during a recent sitting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), taking immediate steps to restore cleanliness in the Asante Akyem South Municipality.

The concerns were raised by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Maame Safoah Appiah, during the PAC hearing held in Kumasi on April 21, 2026. She cited refuse spillages at communal container sites, deteriorating waste containers, and alleged that she had personally financed fuel for waste evacuation in the municipality.

Following the claims, Zoomlion engaged the MCE at the hearing venue and assured her that the issues would be promptly investigated and addressed.

In line with that assurance, the company deployed a high-level team to the municipality on April 22 to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the situation. The team included the Chief Internal Auditor, Group Head of Internal Control, General Manager, Regional Coordinator, District Manager, and Operations Assistant.

The delegation first met with the MCE and her team before embarking on field inspections across the municipality.

As part of the exercise, the team visited nine communal container sites, inspected the landfill, engaged military personnel responsible for fuel management, and held discussions with the Municipal Head of Environment.

Findings from the investigation confirmed significant waste spillages at all the sites visited. Two containers were identified as needing urgent repairs, while two others required immediate replacement. However, five containers were found to be in good condition.

The team also identified delays in fuel supply as a key operational challenge, attributing the situation to shortages at the designated GOIL filling station, which at the time was the only approved fuel supplier for the municipality.

The report further clarified that the MCE had not personally paid for fuel, contrary to the earlier claim. Instead, she had offered to support through the Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO) on the morning of April 21, but Zoomlion staff declined the offer as fuel had become available at the GOIL station.

Based on the findings, Zoomlion immediately implemented corrective measures on the same day, April 22, to address the sanitation challenges.

The company spent nearly GHS 20,000 on hiring equipment, procuring fuel, and mobilising workers to evacuate waste across the municipality. It also acknowledged the support of the MCE, who provided additional trucks to facilitate the exercise.

Zoomlion apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured residents and authorities of its commitment to maintaining high sanitation standards and preventing a recurrence.

Following the intervention, waste at all affected sites has been cleared, significantly improving cleanliness across the municipality.

The company has also outlined long-term measures, including the provision of additional containers, repairs of faulty trucks, diversification of fuel supply sources, and strengthening of its “Operation No Spillage” initiative.

Zoomlion reiterated its commitment to working closely with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies nationwide to promote clean and healthy communities.
