Director of Legal and Constitutional Affairs for the United Party, Andrew Appiah Danquah, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take decisive action against members of his own party allegedly involved in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he stressed that tackling galamsey must begin within the ruling party if the government is serious about ending the menace.

According to him, addressing allegations against NDC officials would send a strong signal to the public and deter others engaged in illegal mining.

He argued that when political actors are held accountable, ordinary citizens involved in galamsey will also begin to reconsider their actions due to the potential consequences.

Andrew Appiah Danquah emphasized that the President must apply the same level of commitment he demonstrated upon assuming office to the fight against illegal mining.

“If the President does not act against his own party members involved in galamsey, the same pressure that was mounted on the previous government will be directed at him.” he added

He warned that failure to act decisively especially against party insiders could weaken the government’s credibility in the fight.

He further cautioned that if the situation is not handled effectively, the same level of public pressure that was mounted on the previous administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo could be directed at the current government in the near future.
