The Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana (Teacher Trainees’ Association of Ghana) is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the automatic posting policy for newly trained teachers, while describing the government’s recent recruitment of 7,000 teachers as insufficient.
According to the association, the exercise by the Ministry of Education does not adequately address the growing backlog of trained teachers who remain unemployed after completing their training.
Speaking at a press conference at TTAG’s national secretariat on Wednesday, April 22, the association’s President, Nanija Devine, urged government to significantly increase postings to absorb all trained teachers and restore the automatic placement system.
He expressed concern over the future of teacher trainees, revealing that more than 45,000 trained teachers are currently awaiting posting, while over 65,000 students are still in Colleges of Education.
Mr. Devine warned that the situation raises serious questions about the relevance of teacher training if employment opportunities are not guaranteed.
“Those currently in the Colleges of Education are over 65,000. If the 45,000 already trained do not know when they will be posted, then what about those still in training? What is the essence of their education?” he questioned.
He further argued that if government is unable to recruit the backlog of trained teachers, then the continued operation of the Colleges of Education should be reconsidered.
“If indeed the government cannot recruit the 45,000 trained teachers in the system, then the Colleges of Education should consider closing down,” he stated.
TTAG is therefore urging authorities to take urgent steps to address the backlog and provide clear employment pathways for teacher trainees across the country.
