The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated a committee tasked with overseeing the establishment of new public universities across the country.

The committee will advise government on expanding access to tertiary education and is expected to submit its report to the Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, April 15, Mr Iddrisu underscored the importance of the committee’s work, describing it as pivotal to shaping the future of higher education in Ghana.

“Higher education remains a critical public good and a national necessity,” he stated. “Many young Ghanaians still face challenges in accessing quality tertiary education across the country.”

He explained that the formation of the committee follows a directive from the President, upon the request of the Vice President, to develop a strategic roadmap for the creation of additional public universities.

Chairperson of the committee and former Minister for Education, Christina Amoako-Nuama, welcomed the initiative, describing it as both timely and forward-looking.

She noted that the committee’s mandate goes beyond establishing new institutions to include completing ongoing infrastructure projects and expanding existing tertiary institutions.

“The task ahead is ambitious but necessary,” she said. “It presents a significant opportunity to widen access to higher education and strengthen the country’s human capital development.”

The committee is expected to play a key role in guiding government policy on tertiary education expansion in the coming years.
