The Ghana Football Association has ended its working relationship with Black Stars technical advisor Winfried Schäfer as part of a broader restructuring exercise ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Schäfer, who was appointed in late 2024 to support then head coach Otto Addo following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, later assumed an expanded role as Director of Football in 2025.
His departure, however, comes in the wake of Addo’s own dismissal, signalling a sweeping overhaul of the national team’s technical setup.
Adom FM and Asempa FM Sports can confirm that the German tactician was relieved of his duties shortly after the Black Stars’ international friendly against Germany in Stuttgart in March.
That fixture followed a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria in Vienna, a result that appeared to have accelerated the FA’s decision-making.
With the technical bench now vacant, the GFA is expected to grant the incoming head coach full authority to assemble his own backroom staff. Several high-profile names have already been linked with the role, including Slaven Bilić, Carlos Queiroz and Fernando Santos.
An appointment is anticipated in the coming days, ahead of the team’s next camp in May. The Black Stars are scheduled to face Mexico and Wales in international friendlies on June 2, before kicking off their World Cup campaign later that month.
Ghana will open their tournament against Panama on June 17, followed by group fixtures against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27, as they seek to move beyond the group-stage exits suffered in both 2014 and 2022.
