The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has appealed to corporate institutions to prioritise employment opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and the youth as part of efforts to expand access to decent jobs in the capital.

The appeal was made during a two-day working visit to selected companies in the metropolis, organised by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to strengthen partnerships with the private sector and promote inclusive economic growth.

During the tour, the Mayor visited Melcom Group, Royal Motors, M/S Thakar Overseas Limited and Sigma Gas Company Limited. Discussions focused on deepening collaboration, addressing operational challenges and exploring avenues for job creation for residents.

Hon. Allotey urged the companies to adopt inclusive recruitment policies by deliberately reserving positions for qualified PWDs and young people, stressing that access to employment is critical to improving livelihoods and driving the city’s economic development.

He noted that the initiative forms part of the Assembly’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy aimed at working closely with the private sector to address constraints affecting businesses while encouraging expansion and sustainable job creation.

The Mayor also called on companies to support urban development efforts by adopting and maintaining green public and open spaces to improve sanitation and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the metropolis.

At Melcom, Managing Director Ramesh Sadhwa disclosed that the company currently employs about 6,000 people nationwide and is seeking to fill more than 100 vacant positions. However, he indicated that the company faces challenges in recruiting applicants with the requisite skills for certain roles.

Hon. Allotey assured the business community of the Assembly’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for businesses to grow, invest and contribute meaningfully to employment generation, particularly for vulnerable groups and young people in Accra.
