The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has renewed calls for the swift passage of the Sports Fund Bill, arguing that a well-structured financing framework could significantly boost Ghana’s contribution to its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, February 19, the Buem MP stressed that sustainable funding is critical as Ghana gears up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He noted that the success of the Black Stars on the global stage will depend heavily on adequate financial backing.
“Ghana has qualified for the World Cup; funding will be a key component for our participation, and it is in that spirit, Speaker, I make this statement,” he said.
He emphasised that passing legislation alone would not transform the sector without genuine commitment and investment.
Citing global figures, the Minister observed that the sports industry is valued at more than $500 billion worldwide, yet contributes less than 0.5 per cent to GDP in most African countries.
“Legislation alone does not finance sports; commitment does. Globally, the sports industry exceeds USD 500 billion in value, yet on our continent, sports contribute less than 0.5% to GDP in most countries, not because we lack talent, not because we lack passion, but because we have not yet built a financing system that matches our ambition.”
According to Adams, the proposed Ghana Sports Fund would establish a transparent and accountable structure to support infrastructure development, grassroots and school sports, elite athlete preparation, welfare schemes, and recreational activities nationwide.
“The Ghana Sports Fund provides us with that system. It creates a transparent and accountable framework to support infrastructural development, school and grassroots sports, elite athlete preparation, welfare systems and recreation,” he added.
In a show of support, the National Investment Bank donated GH¢100,000 to the Sports Fund. The Minister himself and South Dayi MP Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor also made personal contributions.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, before taking on England on June 23 and concluding the group phase against Croatia on June 27.
