The Sofoline Mechanic Chairman, Ing Waco Koffi, has blamed workers at the yard for the extent of damage caused them in a fire outbreak.

In an interview with Adom News, Mr. Koffi revealed someone was burning refuse dump in a fitting shop near the area where the blaze started.

“I believe the fire was caused by our own actions. someone was burning a refuse dump in the fitting shop this evening, and that is where the fire started.

“We have been warned several times by the Fire Service and NADMO not to burn stuff in the fitting shop, but some of us just wouldn’t listen and now look what’s happened.

A devastating fire swept through a cluster of mechanic shops at Sofoline in the Kwadaso Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Sunday, January 25, 2026, leaving destruction in its wake.

The blaze, which broke out around 7:00 p.m., razed more than 100 vehicles, numerous engines, and large quantities of upholstery materials, leaving shop owners and workers counting heavy losses.

Firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, and after a four-hour battle, they successfully brought the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire officially remains unknown and investigations are ongoing to determine what sparked the blaze.

According to an eyewitness, “When the fire broke out, we tried to contain it while our leaders were calling the fire service. Kudos to the fire service – they did a great job controlling it; if not for them, things would have been a lot worse.”

“A significant number of vehicles has been destroyed, including brand new cars, those in for servicing, and others that were just parked there, leaving owners with huge losses”, another eyewitness lament.

Affected shop owners are assessing their losses, with many fearing the financial impact of the destruction.

Ing. Waco has therefore urged the government to lend a hand, saying they need support to bounce back from this disaster.
