President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for a new accommodation project for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), aimed at improving the living conditions of personnel and upgrading ageing barracks facilities.

This was on Friday, January 23, at Burma Camp during activities marking GAF’s end-of-year West African Social Activities (WASSA) celebration, held at the forecourt of the GAF Public Relations Department.

The housing project is part of a wider regeneration programme designed to transform the Burma Camp enclave.

It will replace old, low-rise residential blocks with modern high-rise apartments, a redesign expected to open up more than half of the existing land space within the camp.

Officials say work on the project will be supported initially through a self-help fundraising exercise in April, targeting the construction of about 200 housing units in the first phase.

At the same event, President Mahama presented a number of operational vehicles to the Armed Forces to strengthen their logistics and mobility. The fleet included pick-ups, buses and Land Cruiser vehicles.

In his address, President Mahama praised the Armed Forces for safeguarding peace and stability in a sub-region confronted by changing and complex security threats.

He said Ghana’s image as a stable democracy rests largely on the discipline, professionalism and sacrifices of military personnel.

He added that the GAF continues to be central to national security, civil support operations, humanitarian assistance and broader development efforts.

In response, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General William Agyapong, expressed gratitude to the President for his consistent backing and leadership, describing them as vital to the military’s ability to carry out its constitutional responsibilities.

He also thanked government for prioritising the welfare, preparedness and capacity-building of GAF.

The ceremony was attended by high-level government and military officials, including the Finance Minister and Acting Defence Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak-Muntaka.
