The final funeral rites of George Kwame Oduro, a 40-year-old man from Assin Fosu Odumasi in the Central Region, have been thrown into uncertainty after his body was mistakenly buried by another family nearly three months ago.
According to information gathered by Adom News from the family house of the deceased, Mr Oduro died in September 2025, after which his remains were deposited at the Assin Brofoyedru Mortuary for preservation ahead of his funeral.
Following weeks of preparations, the family head, Abusuapanyin Asare Oduro, dispatched a delegation to the mortuary to convey the body for burial.
However, before the delegation could proceed, the family received information directing them to report to the Assin Fosu Police Station.
Speaking to Radio Fosu and Adom News correspondent Alfred Amoh, Abusuapanyin Oduro said that upon arrival at the police station, they met staff of the Assin Brofoyedru Mortuary and members of another family who had unknowingly buried Mr Oduro’s body.
According to him, police informed the family that the body of George Kwame Oduro had been mistakenly exchanged with that of a 75-year-old man and buried by the other family about three months ago.
The revelation has left the family devastated, especially as they had already completed all funeral arrangements, including cooking, payment for undertakers, sound systems, canopies, mattresses, accommodation and other logistics.
The family is now demanding compensation to cover the cost of the funeral preparations and has also called for the exhumation of the body to allow for a proper burial and the fixing of a new funeral date.
Meanwhile, some family members have expressed deep frustration and emotional distress over the incident, describing the situation as painful and unacceptable.
