Seven people have died and 18 others sustained injuries following a serious road traffic crash at Komenda Asamasa on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway on Monday evening, January 12, 2026.
The fatalities included three females—one reportedly pregnant—one baby, and three males.
The accident involved a Sprinter bus (GS 6705-21) travelling from Komenda to Takoradi and a Man Diesel truck (GS 8394-Y) heading in the opposite direction toward Cape Coast.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Komenda Fire Station received an emergency call at 7:25 p.m. and immediately dispatched a rescue team to the scene.
Upon arrival, responders found several passengers trapped inside the mangled Sprinter bus, which had veered into nearby vegetation following the collision. Firefighters successfully extricated six victims and transported them to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Another female casualty, who had been taken to the hospital earlier, was also confirmed dead, bringing the total fatalities to seven.
The 18 injured individuals, who had been rescued before the Fire Service arrived, are receiving treatment at the hospital for various injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the Man Diesel truck allegedly lost control while overtaking another vehicle, crashing head-on into the oncoming Sprinter bus.
After completing rescue operations, the Fire Service worked to clear debris from the highway, helping to ease traffic congestion and restore safety at the crash site.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution, particularly on high-speed corridors where wrongful overtaking remains a leading cause of serious crashes.
