The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has urged residents and city authorities in Sunyani to fully embrace the National Sanitation Day initiative to restore the city’s beauty and improve environmental health.
He made the call on Saturday in Sunyani during the first National Sanitation Day exercise for 2026, observed on the first Saturday of the year.
Addressing participants, the Minister encouraged municipal authorities to prioritise sanitation in their development agenda, stressing the need for regular and sustained clean-up exercises. He called on city authorities to focus on cleaning public spaces while enhancing the city’s aesthetics.
According to Mr Ibrahim, initiatives such as planting more trees, repainting pavements, and installing functional streetlights would improve visibility at night and contribute to a more attractive urban environment. He appealed to residents, traders, and institutions to take collective responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean, emphasising that sanitation is a shared duty.
Meanwhile, the Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, issued a stern warning to residents, noting that anyone caught littering would face punishment. He revealed that the traditional council plans to collaborate with the Sunyani Municipal Assembly to develop and enforce by-laws addressing sanitation challenges in the municipality and assured full support to ensure strict enforcement.
The Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Seid Mubarak, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Vincent Antwi Agyei, highlighted that restoring Sunyani’s image as a clean city would require collective effort and sustained commitment from all stakeholders. They emphasised that cleanliness should be embraced as a culture rather than a one-time activity, urging residents to continuously support initiatives aimed at building a healthier, greener, and more beautiful city.
The Municipal Chief Executive further stated that the Sunyani Municipal Assembly would strictly enforce existing by-laws to address sanitation challenges and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
