The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, says a decision on Francis Abu’s availability for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be taken after the midfielder fully recovers from injury.
The Toulouse FC player is currently recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained during the Black Stars’ international friendly against Japan last month. Abu suffered fractures to two bones after an awkward twist while attempting to block a shot.
Explaining the situation in an interview with Joy Sports, Asante Twum said the timeline for Abu’s return depends largely on the type of surgery he underwent.
“Normally, it depends on the kind of surgery that takes place. We were fortunate to get one of the best surgeons to operate on him, a very young Japanese doctor, and he promised that Abu would be back very soon after the surgery,” he stated.
Initial assessments from Toulouse suggested that the midfielder could miss the World Cup. However, his early return to training has raised optimism about a possible comeback in time for the tournament.
“We have to wait for Abu to recover. We pray that he recovers on time and starts field work,” Asante Twum added. “Once he begins to get some playing time, a final decision will be made.”
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by June 1, 2026.
