The Ga Traditional Council has condemned recent attacks on Ga settlers in the Eastern Region, particularly in the communities of Okanta and Otwebedidua.

According to the Council, these settlements have suffered repeated aggression from neighbouring Akyem groups over land ownership, despite the Ga people having occupied the lands for more than two centuries.

The situation in Okanta came to public attention over the weekend following a press release by Hon. J. Ayikoi-Otoo, President of the Ga Dangme Council, which denounced the alleged illegal attacks.

Reports of similar incidents in Otwebedidua were received by the Council earlier this week.

Reacting to the developments, the President of the Ga Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, described the acts as “heinous, inhuman, and violent,” stating that they have resulted in systemic injustices and violated the rights of descendants of the original Ga inhabitants.

The Council highlighted the severe impact of the attacks on the settlers’ livelihoods and fundamental human rights.

The Ga Traditional Council has called on all stakeholders and affected parties to appear before His Royal Majesty by Wednesday at 10 a.m. to present their cases.

It has also urged local chiefs and alleged perpetrators to recognise and respect the land rights of the settlers, while appealing to the Police to restore law and order and ensure the protection of human rights.
