The Accra District Court has remanded Sampson Azumah, the man accused of stabbing a firefighter during a fire incident at Adjiriganor last Friday, into police custody for two weeks.

Azumah, who was arrested at the scene by firefighters and handed over to police, was arraigned on Monday following the November 14 attack that left a Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) officer injured during an emergency response.

He has been charged with causing bodily harm to a fire officer.

The Greater Accra Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, confirmed the update after the suspect’s first court appearance. Azumah is expected to make his next appearance on December 10, 2025.

Court officials ordered that the suspect remain in custody while investigations continue.

ACFO II Nisawu emphasized that the GNFS considers the incident a serious matter and is determined to ensure justice for the injured officer.

Addressing reports that Azumah appeared distressed and cried during court proceedings, he said such emotional displays would not affect the pursuit of justice.

“These things have gone on for far too long. Whether he was crying in court or not, we will not allow that to stop us from pursuing justice. If we don’t enforce the law and give the young officer justice, other officers will not be encouraged. They will not dedicate their lives to this profession,” ACFO II Nisawu stressed.

He added that the leadership of the Ghana National Fire Service, from the Chief Fire Officer to regional commanders, is fully committed to protecting personnel and ensuring that attacks on firefighters are treated with the seriousness they deserve.

The injured firefighter is currently receiving medical care.
