NAIMOS storms Obuasi, seizes illegal mining equipment in major swoop

-

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) task force has carried out a coordinated operation at several illegal mining sites in Obuasi, following intelligence reports of renewed galamsey activity in the Amansie Central District.

The operation, conducted on Monday, November 17, 2025, began at a concession in Anyankyireml.

The site, legally owned by Asanti Gold Corporation, had reportedly been taken over by groups of illegal miners who had prevented the company from accessing its own concession for months.

Task force teams moved in to reclaim the area, driving out the miners and securing the land for its rightful owners.

Officers then extended the swoop to areas surrounding the Obuasi Airport, where illegal mining operations had also been detected.

Motorbikes, vehicles, water pumps and other tools used for the activities were seized, while makeshift shelters and assorted equipment were destroyed.

Most of the miners fled upon seeing the task force approaching. However, one man believed to be a key coordinator of the illegal operations was arrested. He is assisting police with investigations and is expected to face prosecution.

Officials say the exercise is part of a renewed effort to clamp down on galamsey networks and restore concessions to their lawful holders.
