Medeama SC suffered a late setback in their CAF Champions League campaign after losing 1-0 to TP Mazembe in the first leg of the preliminary round in Tarkwa.
The Ghana Premier League champions looked on course to earn a positive result at the TNA Stadium, but an 86th-minute strike from the DR Congo side handed the visitors a slender advantage ahead of the return leg.
Medeama made the brighter start and controlled the opening exchanges, keeping the five-time African champions at bay for much of the first half.
The Tarkwa-based club also created opportunities to take the lead but could not find a way past Mazembe’s defence, with the teams going into the break level at 0-0.
The contest became more open after half-time as both sides pushed for a breakthrough.
Mazembe eventually found the decisive moment four minutes from time, leaving Medeama with an uphill task to overturn the deficit in the second leg and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
