See where new 198.7 kilometres Accra–Kumasi 6-lane Expressway Project captured in 2026 Budget will pass

The planned new Accra–Kumasi Expressway, expected to be a completely new road built to full expressway standards rather than an upgrade of the existing N6 route, has been captured in the 2026 Budget Statement presented in Parliament on Thursday.

The project is set to become Ghana’s first purpose-built expressway, featuring limited access points, higher speed limits, and enhanced safety infrastructure aimed at reducing travel time and minimizing accidents.

This landmark development will create a modern high-speed corridor linking Accra and Kumasi.

Presenting the 2026 Budget Statement, the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, said the expressway will stretch almost 200 kilometres from the coast to the forest belt.

He explained that the project is expected to transform travel and trade, cut journey times significantly, and boost economic growth across the southern regions.

According to the minister, the route runs southeast to northwest through the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Ashanti Regions, passing key towns including Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase, and Kwaso.

In total, the highway will span 198.7 kilometres, comprising 23 kilometres of urban connecting sections in Accra and Kumasi built as 4-lane roads with speeds of up to 60 kilometres per hour, and a 175-kilometre main expressway with 6 lanes designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour.

The project is expected to stand as a symbol of Ghana’s commitment to modernisation, improved connectivity, and inclusive growth.
