A group of journalists accompanying officials from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on an anti-illegal mining operation has been involved in an accident in the Ashanti Region.

The team was conducting an operation to clamp down on illegal mining activities around Obuasi when the exercise reportedly turned violent.

Accra-based Citi News reported that in the community of Dadwene, the EPA task force and journalists were attacked by a group of miners, forcing them to retreat for safety.

While withdrawing through Afari, one of the convoy’s vehicles crashed, leaving several people injured. Two journalists are reported to be in critical condition, while others sustained varying degrees of injury.

Authorities have yet to provide full details, but investigations into both the attack and the accident are ongoing.
