President John Mahama has reiterated his government’s dedication to building a more inclusive society for persons with disabilities, unveiling plans to distribute rechargeable motorised wheelchairs and directing all ministries to ensure strict compliance with Ghana’s Disability Act.

The President made the announcement during the launch of the Free Tertiary Education for Persons with Disabilities initiative in Accra, where he said the interventions reflect his administration’s long-term commitment to dismantling barriers and fostering equal opportunities for all citizens.

“We intend to introduce a system for distributing rechargeable motorised wheelchairs for persons with disability,” Mr. Mahama stated.

He further disclosed that he has instructed all ministers of state to “review their obligations under the Disability Act and present action plans for full compliance within the shortest possible time.”

Mr. Mahama underscored that the nation’s approach toward disability inclusion must evolve from charity-based sympathy to meaningful collaboration and empowerment.

“I call on the private sector, civil society, our development partners, universities and the media to join hands in this noble mission,” he urged.

“Let us transform our national attitude from commiseration to partnership, from exclusion to empowerment, and from sympathy to solidarity,” the President concluded.
