NAIMOS Task Force deals major blow to galamsey in Western Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has intensified its campaign against illegal mining with a major operation in the Western Region.

On Monday, October 5, 2025, the Task Force stormed “Gangway,” a known galamsey enclave in Aboso within the Prestea-Huni Valley District, dismantling makeshift structures and seizing equipment.

According to officials, several shacks serving as hideouts and drug dens were set ablaze, while mining equipment used by the operators was destroyed.

Hundreds of locals, mostly galamseyers, reportedly surrendered to the Task Force during the operation. Many were said to be involved in illegal mining, drug use, and gambling.

The team also confiscated eleven parcels of Indian hemp and other hard drugs.

This latest action follows an earlier exercise in June 2025, when NAIMOS warned illegal miners and criminal gangs to vacate the area, a directive that was largely ignored.

While en route to Gangway, the Task Force carried out additional operations in the Dadwen-Domping areas of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

Fifteen water-pumping machines and one generator were seized, while three chanfangs and several makeshift structures were destroyed.

NAIMOS states that it remains committed to eliminating illegal mining and its associated social ills in the region, as part of efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainable livelihoods.
