The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has announced the suspension of all boxing activities in Ghana following the tragic death of boxer Ernest Akushey.
Akushey, popularly known in boxing circles as Bahubali, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, after sustaining severe injuries during his bout with Jacob Dickson at the Bukom Boxing Arena on September 12. He was admitted to LEKMA Hospital in Accra, where he later succumbed to internal bleeding.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show on Wednesday, September 24, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah said the suspension will remain in place until investigations into the circumstances surrounding Akushey’s death are completed.
“All boxing activities are hence suspended pending investigation into the death of Ernest Akushey,” he stated.
He further revealed that preliminary information suggested the late boxer may have fought more bouts in the past two years than regulations allow.
“The deceased boxer Ernest Akushey is said to have fought in multiple bouts over the past 12-24 months, which shouldn’t have happened,” he added.
Akushey, who competed in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, ended his professional career with eight fights, recording six victories.
