President John Mahama has called on African leaders to adopt homegrown solutions to fund healthcare and other critical sectors, rather than relying heavily on donor support.
Speaking in New York at the launch of the Accra Reset Initiative, the former president brought together world leaders, former presidents, heads of international organizations, and financial institutions to explore innovative ways of addressing Africa’s development challenges.
The roundtable discussion featured the Director-Generals of the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Trade Organization (WTO), alongside African leaders and stakeholders.
The Accra Reset Initiative is co-chaired by President Mahama and former Nigerian leader Olusegun Obasanjo, with Ghana serving as the lead.
President Mahama stressed that Africa must “look within” to sustain healthcare funding, drawing lessons from past experiences and the ongoing shifts in the global moral and financial order. He emphasized that true progress would come only when the continent takes responsibility for its own development.
