Tarkwa-Nsuaem MCE reacts to market cave-in, assures of public safety [Audio]

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Ebenezer Cobbinah, has assured residents that the recent cave-in incident at the Tarkwa market has been fully resolved.

Preliminary reports suggested the collapse was linked to galamsey activities along an old shaft running through parts of the municipality.

Former Head of Public Affairs at COCOBOD, Fiifi Boafo, confirmed the incident, noting that it occurred on the night of September 8. He stressed that the situation could have led to significant casualties if traders had been present at the market.

However, speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Cobbinah clarified that the incident was not caused by illegal mining but rather by underground mining that has taken place in the area since the Gold Coast era.

“I was informed and quickly visited the market. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) came in and solved the problem. They have filled the place and done all that needed to be done,” the MCE explained.

He emphasised that the situation is now under control and assured that the Assembly will work toward a long-term fix.
“As I speak, there is no challenge there. Going forward, we will look at how we can find a permanent solution,” he added.
