Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced plans to visit Mpatuam in the Amansie West District after violent clashes between residents and military officers claimed two lives, including that of an Assembly Member.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Amoakohene described the incident as “very regrettable” and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

“This should never have happened. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, and I want to assure them that investigations are ongoing to unravel what really happened,” he said.

The Minister cautioned the public to remain calm while the matter is being addressed.

“When incidents like this occur, we must resist the temptation to act irrationally because it only worsens the situation. We need to engage the community well and also engage Asanko Mining Company to find lasting solutions,” he stressed.

Dr. Amoakohene noted that tensions between mining companies and host communities are becoming a recurring issue in areas where large-scale mining operations exist.

He assured that security agencies are maintaining close surveillance in Mpatuam to ensure safety and prevent further disturbances.

“So far, the community and the families are still hurt, but we are determined to resolve this matter. The community needs healing, and that is our priority,” he added.

The Minister revealed that, pending security clearance, he will visit the community to sympathise with the families of the victims and hold discussions with traditional leaders, residents, and the mining company.

“Today or tomorrow, I will be in Mpatuam to see the extent of the damage and engage all parties involved. We need to bridge the gap and bring peace so that the mining community can also work in peace,” he explained.

The clashes, which occurred on Monday and Tuesday, erupted when military personnel confronted residents who were allegedly attempting to invade one of Asanko Gold’s mining concessions. The exact trigger of the confrontation, however, remains under investigation.
