Security Analyst praises police for handling of Akwatia by-election

Security Analyst, Samuel Nana Appiah

Security analyst Samuel Nana Appiah has commended the Ghana Police Service for their performance during the Akwatia by-election, noting that their quick interventions helped manage minor tussles that occurred.

Although he initially questioned the deployment of over 5,500 uniformed officers in the constituency, Appiah acknowledged that the scale of the operation was justified by the results.

“Based on the training and security work I have been doing, no police or security work can score 100%. They are always ranked between 75-80% even in an advanced country. So the 75-80% is a pass mark,” he said, adding that he would rate the police’s performance in Akwatia within that range.

Appiah further suggested that if the police consistently applied the same diligence in every by-election, it would build public trust and confidence in the service.

“If that continues, a time will come when the police will not even need 5,000 men but maybe 1,000 or 2,000; they can perform the work very well,” he added.
