The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has postponed proceedings on the second petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after both the petitioner and the Chief Justice requested an adjournment.
The Committee, which is handling three separate petitions referred to President John Mahama in March this year, had initially planned to begin work on the second petition immediately after concluding hearings on the first.
However, the panel granted the joint request, with its Chairman explaining that while the Committee is mandated to act promptly, fairness and due process require giving parties sufficient time to prepare.
“In light of this, we will address the second and third petitions in due course,” the Chairman stated when presenting the Committee’s report on the first petition to President Mahama at Jubilee House.
The first petition, which has already been concluded, involved detailed testimony from both sides and nearly 10,000 pages of documents. A sealed report containing the Committee’s recommendation on the matter has since been submitted to the President.
