Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged residents of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba (STK) District to remain calm following reports of gunfire and the displacement of some locals.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Mr. Bagbin described the situation as “deeply concerning” and called on the community to stay composed despite the disturbances.
He reminded residents of the district’s long-standing reputation for peaceful coexistence, stressing the importance of safeguarding that identity.
“STK has always been admired for its peaceful nature, and it is important that this reputation is preserved,” he stated.
The Speaker commended youth groups who have spoken out against inflammatory remarks and encouraged ongoing dialogue and restraint. He also appealed to traditional and opinion leaders to actively support efforts to restore calm.
Mr. Bagbin further urged residents to cooperate fully with security agencies deployed to stabilise the area, emphasising that unity and peace must remain the priority.
The district is currently under a 12-hour curfew. Some residents fleeing the disturbances on Thursday reportedly drowned in the White Volta after their boat capsized.
