Gbenyiri clashes: Residents flee as violence spreads to farmlands

The Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba, Andrew Chiwetey, has painted a grim picture of the situation in Gbenyiri and surrounding areas, where violent clashes over land have claimed 10 lives and displaced hundreds.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP revealed that the violence has spread beyond the town into the bushes, with people being attacked and killed on their farms.

According to him, armed groups riding motorbikes storm communities swiftly, making it difficult for the police to respond effectively, even when residents alert security services. He added that the poor road network in the area has further hampered security interventions.

“The town is practically a ghost town now. Many people have fled. As of Monday, about 400 people had taken refuge in my house. While some have managed to travel to the south, others keep arriving, so the numbers continue to fluctuate,” Mr. Chiwetey explained.

He commended faith-based organizations and community leaders for stepping in to provide relief, noting that the Church of Pentecost has been housing and feeding displaced residents at designated safe havens while security forces work to restore calm.

Mr. Chiwetey described the situation as dire and called for urgent action to protect lives and restore peace in the Savannah Region.
