A total of 63 master craftsmen in the Ahafo Region are taking part in a three-day training workshop under the government’s free apprenticeship programme, aimed at tackling unemployment and enhancing skills development across the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Goaso, the Ahafo Regional Coordinator for the National Apprenticeship Programme, Sulemana Baba Amadu, explained that the training is designed to sharpen the knowledge and techniques of the selected masters.
This will ensure that apprentices enrolled in their shops receive high-quality instruction in various trades, including hairdressing, fashion, carpentry, masonry, tiling, and welding.
Mr. Amadu noted that the initiative is currently a pilot programme, with 10 qualified masters selected from each of the six districts in the region. In addition, three masters from the Federation of Persons with Disabilities have been included to ensure inclusivity.
He stressed that before any master is approved to train apprentices under the government’s scheme, they must meet specific requirements, including accreditation from the Ghana Standards Authority, business registration with the Registrar General’s Department, a Ghana Revenue Authority tax certificate, and a Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) clearance certificate.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asunafo North, Joseph Akparibo, also addressed the participants, urging them to treat apprentices with care and patience regardless of challenges. He emphasized that the success and sustainability of the programme depend largely on the commitment and dedication of the selected trainers.
“This programme will only thrive if masters give their best in training apprentices,” Mr. Akparibo said. “If they put in their full effort, the government will be encouraged to continue and expand the initiative.”
The free apprenticeship programme is part of the government’s broader efforts to reduce unemployment, promote skills acquisition, and provide opportunities for young people across Ghana.
